Practices

Our team practices begin around July 1st at alternating locations to accommodate all of Northern Kentucky. We will practice twice a week in the evening.

A typical practice lasts around 2 hours and includes work on drills and techniques for the first half of practice while saving the second half for riding. Groups of riders will be split up based on ability and speed with coaches leading each group. Practice is the opportunity to increase endurance, but every athlete is encouraged to ride at their own pace. Parents can wait, take a walk while you wait, or drop off and come back.

Skills practiced

Practices are led by trained coaches and ride leaders, and student athletes can expect to learn on the bike and trail riding skills including:

  • Neutral/Ready Body Position
  • Bike/Body Separation – Front/Back and Side to Side
  • Intro to Cornering
  • Shifting
  • Seated/Crouched/Standing Climbing
  • Descending
  • Trail Riding
  • Apply on the bike skills
  • Safe distance from other riders
  • Communication on the trail
  • Etiquette with other trail users

If any parent is interested in riding with the group, you’ll have to register and submit a fee to NICA and complete a few required trainings. We’re always looking for additional parent volunteers/coaches; contact us for more information!
