There isn’t a lot of required equipment to participate in mountain biking: namely a bike, helmet, and water!

Bike

  • Just about any bike generally considered to be a mountain bike will work. Mountain bikes normally incorporate features designed to enhance durability and performance in rough terrain. They often include a suspension fork, large knobby tires, more durable wheels, more powerful brakes, wide handlebars to improve balance and comfort over rough terrain, and wide-ratio gearing to make getting up those hills a little easier.
  • Riders on our team have bikes that run the gamut from rigid (no suspension) budget friendly entry level bikes to top of the line machines with front and rear suspension. Often the best riders aren’t even the ones with the nicest bikes though! If you already have the perfect bike, that’s great, but if you don’t, feel free to bring what you have. Several of our coaches are mechanically inclined and we’ll check your bike over to make sure it’s trail ready. We can also point you in the right direction if you’re looking to upgrade.
  • Discounts from our Sponsors: If you need a bike, several local bike shops offer discounts for NICA athletes! Trek and Reser Bicycle Outfitters offer substantial discounts on new bikes, just let them know that you are part of NICA, and they’ll help you find the perfect fit.

Helmet

  • A good fitting helmet is a requirement of our team and the league we are a part of. Whenever we’re on our bikes a helmet has to be on our heads. You won’t be allowed to practice or race without one.

Water

  • Riding bikes can wear you out, and staying hydrated is key. Most mountain bikes have a spot to install a water bottle holder, so that you’ve got your water on your bike at all times. Some of our riders prefer hydration packs that you wear like a backpack or fanny pack. No matter what, you’ll want to make sure you have plenty of water for practices and races.
